汉口港是长江上的顶洋港,可通航世界最大的远洋船

在没有南京长江大桥和三峡大坝之前,汉口港是长江上的顶洋港,海船能到的最高点。汉口港的航道最浅深度在冬季枯水期是3-5米,在5-9月的夏季丰水期根据每年的变化大约有9-17米的变化,所以夏季丰水期汉口港的航道最浅深度在12-22米左右,可以通航当时和现在世界最大的远洋船。

The early years of the new century saw big changes in ships. Sail and wood were giving way to coal and iron. British shipyards were busy building vessels not only for Britain but also for Japan. Germany and France were experimenting with submarines and airships, but the Royal Navy held back on these new weapons. There was a school of thought that submarines were improper, but he applied anyway to join submarines. Before that was allowed he had to serve in a seagoing surface ship, so in 1901 he joined his first warship, HMS Glory (12,500 tons) on the China station during the Boxer rebellions. The task was the control of the opium trade. For this purpose HMS Glory sailed 1,100 miles up the Yangtze River to Hankow, to give support to the troops ashore.

HMS Glory was a pre-dreadnought battleship of the British Royal Navy and a member of the Canopus class. Intended for service in Asia, Glory and her sister ships were smaller and faster than the preceding Majestic-class battleships, but retained the same battery of four 12-inch (305 mm) guns. She also carried thinner armour, but incorporated new Krupp steel, which was more effective than the Harvey armour used in the Majestics. Glory was laid down in December 1896, launched in March 1899, and commissioned into the fleet in November 1900.

Glory spent much of her peacetime career abroad. She was assigned to the China Station from 1901 to 1905, before returning to British waters for a brief stint with the Channel Fleet and then the Home Fleet from late 1905 to early 1907. After a refit in 1907, she was then sent to the Mediterranean Fleet, where she remained until April 1909. She then returned to Britain and was reduced to reserve status. She remained inactive until the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, at which time she was mobilised into the 8th Battle Squadron.

In October 1914, Glory was transferred to the North America and West Indies Station, where she served as the squadron flagship. In June 1915, she was reassigned to the Mediterranean, and she took part in the Dardanelles Campaign, though she saw little action during that time, as her crew was needed ashore to support the troops fighting in the Gallipoli campaign. In August 1916, Glory was sent to Murmansk, Russia, to support Britain's ally by keeping the vital port open for supplies being sent for the Eastern Front. There, she served as the flagship of the British North Russia Squadron. She returned to Britain in 1919, was decommissioned, and was renamed HMS Crescent in 1920, before ultimately being sold to ship breakers in December 1922.

The ships of the Canopus class were 390 feet 3.5 inches (118.961 m) long between perpendiculars and 421 ft 6 in (128.47 m) long overall, with a beam of 74 ft (23 m). They had a draft of 26 ft 2 in (7.98 m) normally and up to 30 feet (9.1 m) fully loaded. They displaced 13,150 long tons (13,360 t) normally and up to 14,300 long tons (14,500 t) at full load. The ships were fitted with two masts, each with one fighting top carrying several of the light guns and one searchlight. Four other searchlights were mounted on the bridges.[5][6]

The first South Dakota (Armored Cruiser No. 9) was laid down on 30 September 1902 at the Union Iron Works, San Francisco, Calif.; sponsored by Grace Harreid, the daughter of Gov. Charles M. Herreid of South Dakota and the wife of Dean Lightner; was launched on 21 July 1904; and commissioned on 27 January 1908, Capt. James T. Smith in command.

South Dakota was renamed Huron in honor of that city in South Dakota on 7 June 1920. Huron reached Hankow (Wuhan) at one point in 1923.

From April to November, when the river is at its highest point, large steamers can reach the port. At times Peninsular and Oriental and other ocean-going vessels come direct with cargo, while the battleship Glory, and one of the largest cruisers at present on the China station, have navigated the river between Shanghai and Hankow.

Ocean-going vessels in the summer go up as far as Hankow, nearly 600 miles from the sea. At Hankow the Yangtze is about a mile wide. When the river is high, large warships also can easily reach this river port.

Steam and power navigation on the river fall into three stages. The first stage is to Hankow, for large vessels of over 10,000 tons; the second stage is to Ichang, for smaller vessels ; and the third stage is to Chungking, this last including the passage of the rapids. There is a further extension to Suifu, but power traffic on this section is not heavy. Suifu is about 1,600 miles from the sea, and the river is thus navigable for nearly half its total length of some 3,200 miles. Small boats and rafts use the river above Suifu, and power craft from that distant port go up a tributary of the river from Suifu to Kiating.

Hankow, one of China’s greatest trade centres, is nearly 603 miles from the sea. Ocean-going vessels of over 10,000 tons can normally reach the port during the summer. The river here is about a mile wide, and when the water is high even large warships can come up to Hankow. In flood times the river at this point can rise as much as 50 feet.

Hankow is one of China’s greatest centres of trade, sea, river and railway traffic. It lies on the north bank of the Yangtze, opposite Wuchang, and marks the limit of a number of river routes. Up to the time of writing, the largest merchant vessel to reach the port is the American tanker Australia, of 11,628 gross tonnage. Despite various troubles the Chinese have persevered in building up the banks of the river; but for this Hankow would have been badly damaged when the river threatened the city in 1935. Hankow is the headquarters of the Lower and Middle Yangtze Customs Administration. The Han Kiang or Han River, which here flows into the Yangtze, provides a means of communication with the country to the north-west, a large amount of cargo being carried in junks.

The feature of greatest importance to the navigation of the river
is the annual rise and fall of water-level. This is large, being about
40 feet at Hankow and 70 feet at Chungking. Generally speaking, the
water-level is at its highest during August and at its lowest in February.
There appear to be some very childish notions current as to the regularity
of this rise and fall. Actually there is much irregularity both in the
amounts and the time, for at Hankow the height may vary by ten feet
more or less than 40, and the times of ocourrence may vary by two
months. As a general rule, Hankow is " open" for ocean steamers for
some eight and a half months in the year, from the middle of March
to the beginning of December, and Chungking for the larger class of
" upper-river" steamers about the same period.
